Ship hull construction: main stages and their description

Shipbuilding is a complex process that requires the contractor to apply a competent approach and innovation. Navalis Group is constantly working on creating and improving modern seaworthy vessels.

We fulfill the set tasks, considering all the realized technological solutions’ reliability requirements. New vessels (ships, yachts) manufactured by us fully comply with all international rules, enabling Navalis Group to offer demanded shipbuilding services successfully.

Stages of ship hull fabrication

The technological process of ship hull fabrication is quite complicated. First, all the large parts and blocks must be assembled to transfer and combine them into a single system. Ship hull fabrication consists of several basic stages, which we will describe in detail below.

The project development, including the elaboration of the basic and functional design

At this stage of vessel hull construction, all the vessel’s systems are designed, including the shape and design of the hull. The preliminary design is approved according to the applicable regulations. Material and technical requirements are determined.

The functional design includes developing schematic representations of the different segments of the future vessel hull. These representations are used to create a list of required materials and coordinate the project with all regulatory authorities.

Panel assembly

This stage of yacht hull construction includes the creation of one-piece panel structures. Each panel is made up of the following components:

  • steel plates welded closely together;
  • quality reinforcements in the form of profiles;
  • additional fastening elements – beams and brackets.

These practical constructions play a leading role in ensuring the strength and stability of the ship hull.

Construction of blocks and sub-blocks

Blocks and sub-blocks consist of pre-joined sections, which in turn consist of solidly welded individual panels. The section is the basic element of steel ship hull construction. On average, water transport can be between 50 and 200 sections.

Assembling blocks and sections to create a ship hull

The joining of the sections and blocks of a ship is carried out in the dry dock. This operation aims to create the final steel boat hull construction. This procedure involves welding all the previously obtained segments into a single unit. This crucial stage requires the use of the most reliable, advanced technologies. It is essential that performing such tasks without considering the quality requirements can lead to irreversible consequences.

Additional work on the equipment and painting

After the steel boat hull fabrication is completed, the vessel is moved for final finishing work. During this stage, individual elements are assembled and painted into the ship’s sections. Paint application is usually performed in a particular production room in compliance with safety rules and regulations. If the hull is properly assembled, the ship is considered ready to install other equipment necessary for its operation.
